Senior men advance to Junior Championship Final

Owenmore Gaels 1-12 St Pats 2-7

Thomas Kerins at Kent Park

Owenmore Gaels and St. Pats met on Sunday afternoon in the semi-final of the Connaught Gold Junior A Championship at Kent Park, Ballydoogan. Having fallen at the same penultimate hurdle in 2019, the Gaels entered the affair hoping to make it through to the Championship final where Tourlestrane awaited the victors.
The pristine pitch surface along with the gentlest of breezes created conditions very favourable to a game of championship football whereby direct use of the football would prove decisive.

St. Pats were quickest out of the traps when the lively forward Jim Davis converted a free within the first minute. Nathan O’Malley followed with the Gaels first score of the day with a nicely taken point after he was put through on goals with a deft flick by Conor Davey.
St. Pats soon regained the lead with a well taken free by Pierce Kearins following good play by James Clarke.
The Gaels Captain and marksman Ryan Phillips raised his first white flag of the day soon afterwards with a nice score that was worked all the way up from the full-back line via Mahon, Trill and Anderson.
The Gaels tactic of delivering fast, long balls into the inside forwards soon paid dividends when Niall Hodgins found Ryan Phillips with an excellent long range delivery that caught the St. Pats defence off guard. Phillips made no qualms in the one-on-one situation and slotted home the first goal of the game, putting the Gaels into the lead of 1-02 to 0-02.

Both teams then exchanged a number of wides whilst St.Pats started to take a stranglehold in the middle third of the field. A James Clarke score for St. Pats was soon after complemented with a point from Gaels centre forward Tommy Trill who capped off a nice team move involving several players.
St.Pats took control of the game after the water break and finished the half the strongest and they made it show on the scoreboard as Jim Davis racked up some crucial scores. Phillips kept the Gaels ticking over when he took a nice fisted point after a long direct ball in from Brian Mahon.
What Phillips was doing at one end, Jim Davis for St. Pats was equally adept at doing at the other end. A swift move involving Patrick Farrell and Ciaran Brady put Davis through on goals and he buried the ball past Jason Farrell in the Gaels nets. St. Pats then took the lead for the first time since the opening score when Davis had a half chance at a goal but he put it over the black spot. St. Pats went into the interval leading by the narrowest of margins on a scoreline 1-05 to 1-04.

The third quarter of the game was where the Gaels found their purple patch and took control of the game. The tenacious Conor Davey curled over a point after Mahon and Whiteside had linked up and broke out of the defence at speed.
Ronan Sweeney who had been introduced at half time opened up the play for the Gaels midfielder and stalwart Niall Hodgins to burst through and he calmly took the score that put us back in front by 1-06 to 1-05. Phillips found himself back on the scoresheet again after good work from the industrious Roly Anderson who was involved in most of the Gaels attacks.
Mayoman Nathan O’Malley delicately curled over the next point after good link-up play with Conor Davey. Phillips kicked two more frees in succession that gave the Gaels a 4-point cushion before the water break.
The St. Pats talisman James Clarke took the next point from a tight angle to narrow the margin.
The next score put the official seal on the victory for the Gaels. O’Malley had dropped deep into midfield and he took a fine mark before he fed Conor Davey who won yet another “dirty” ball. Davey found the stylish Tommy Trill who lofted the ball over the bar to extend the Gaels lead. Ronan Sweeney then set up Phillips for his sixth point of the game thus stretching the Gaels lead to 5 points in the process.
Some tense moments ensued as James Clarke for St. Pats won and converted a penalty that narrowed the gap but it was too little, too late for the men from the West.
The Gaels closed out the game and won on a scoreline of 1-12 to 2-07 and qualified for the Junior A Championship Final where they will meet Tourlestrane on Saturday 19th September in Markievicz Park.
Best on the day for the Gaels were Brian Mahon, Roly Anderson, Nathan O’Malley and Conor Davey.

Junior B team win to keep championship hopes alive

Castleconnor 1-10 Owenmore Gaels 2-12

Our Junior B team headed west this evening for a showdown with Castleconnor knowing only a win would keep our interest in the competition alive after an opening day defeat to Coolaney/Mullinabreena.

We opened the scoring through an Adrian Egan free, before Castleconnor leveled it up. We then hit the opening goal following a flowing move, started by a Bryan McPartland interception in our half back line. A quick interchange between Kyle Taheny and Joe Walsh lead to Niall Dunican been released forward. His ball inside found Thomas Kerins who helped it onto the onrushing Nathan O’Malley who finished emphatically to the net. However our joy was short lived as Castleconnor struck back with an excellent individual goal to level soon after.

Two points in a row from the opposition had them in the ascendancy but we managed to hit another 3 pointer just at the right time. Again Dunican provided the movement to gain some space upfront. He found the supporting Shane Maye who’s ball inside caught out the Castleconnor cover leaving Kerins one v one with the keeper and ‘The Bomb’ kept his cool to nonchalantly stick the ball in the bottom corner. Egan followed up with a free after O’Malley was fouled and we reached the water break 2 in front, 2-2 1-3.

Castleconnor hit the next point before Egan hit a super score with the outside of the boot after patient play where we worked the ball over and back the pitch to fashion the chance. O’Malley followed up with another point before half-time to put us 3 up at half time 2-4 1-4. The key to the strong finish in the half was driven from the back with Taheny, Maye and Walsh getting on top in this sector.

Castleconnor came out determined to turn things around in the second. They hit 4 of the next 6 points as they dominated this period, Our scores coming from Egan after excellent work from Walsh and O’Malley and O’Malley profited after an excellent fetch and pass from Ross Trill.

The opposition had got within one point and were in the assendancy at this point but crucially we managed to stem the tide with two quickfire points just before the water break to maintain our three point lead. The first of these came from O’Malley after a one-two with Dunican, the second a free from Egan after a strong walsh run was illegally halted. 2-8 1-8

Castleconnor got the first score after the break, unfortunate from our point of view as a heroic diving block from Taheny deserved better than to rebound back to a Castleconnor forward to point. However this block and the tigerish work of our back line inspired us to go on and take control for the remainder of the game. Egan pointed after a super pass from Calum Tonry that took out numerous defenders. Patient and controlled play saw us keep the ball for long periods, one of these culminating in Tonry been fouled for Egan to tap over another. O’Malley followed up with a free from the left after Egan was fouled to put us 5 up. Castleconnor hit back with what would prove to be their final score. Walsh incisively cut through the middle to land a score his performance fully deserved. This was the final score as we saw the game out retaining possession impressively. FT 2-12 1-10

A gritty and controlled performance from the lads who now await the final group game between Castleconnor and Coolaney/Mullinabreena to see if we progress.

Best on the day for the Gaels Kyle Taheny, Shane Maye, Bryan McPartland, Joe Walsh and Nathan O’Malley.

Team: Gavin Phelan, Kyle Taheny (c), Shane Kirrane, Shane Maye, Joe Walsh (0-1), Bryan McPartland, Ross Trill, Callum Tonry (Alan Anderson), Niall Dunican, Nathan O’Malley (1-4, 1F), Conall O’Dwyer, Thomas Kerins (1-0), Adrian Egan (0-7, 4F)

Online Table Quiz a great success

We held our inaugural online table quiz last night in what was a bit of a step into the unknown for ourselves and our partners for the evening theHoranstand.com.

The evening commenced with Aoife Hodgins entertaining us with some beautiful singing between 9-9:30 as Liam greeted each participant and showed them to their virtual rooms. Indeed the incredible response we had to the quiz meant a big virtual queue at the venue door so it was about 10pm before we got everybody in place and the quiz started.

As we and the participants got to grips with how the format would work the first few rounds took some time. However each issue was overcome with great understanding from our participants and after 3 or so rounds it was relative plain sailing.

Huge thanks to our resident quizmaster Thomas Kerins for putting together a fantastic quiz. Sound, picture and puzzle rounds were used to help with ‘googleproofing’ the quiz. There was also a lesson in one of the rounds which we will keep to ourselves. Lets just say, Don’t believe everything you read on the world wide web!

It was at times manic in the operating room gathering answers by email and getting scores up to date. A huge thank you to Joey, Donna, Joan, Niall and Aoife who were in the engine room throughout the night.

Also a huge thanks to Liam Horan for organizing and directing proceedings. Liam was a pleasure to work with in the build up to the quiz and put a huge amount of work into preparing us as best possible. Check out the thehoranstand.com website to see the brilliant services they or offering, a brilliant outlet at this current time. The Friday night out, In definitely one to check out for a meet up with your friends.

In the end their can only be one winner and while it was very close throughout Table 28, ‘Stephen’s Kippers’ took the title of first online quiz winners with a magnificent total of 75 correct answers from 80 questions. The team was made of of the Ballisodare trio of Leigh Cavanagh, Stephen Healy and Gavin Phelan with Mark McDonagh joining all the way from Ohio USA to make up the quartet. This shows the great benefits of the online format as our quiz had a global reach. In second place on 73 was table number 34 ‘Big Fact Hunt’ made up of Morven Connolly, Debbie Connolly, and Jennifer and Anthony Gilvarry.

Congratulations to our top two teams who recieve a €50 voucher each, generously donated by Whitesides Centra Collooney and For Pete’s Streak Butcher shop Collooney.

We hope all of the participants enjoyed the night. Thanks for your patience throughout the early stages and understanding on the time overun. We definitely learned a lot of lessons, and no doubt when we do it again, in the near future hopefully, it will be more streamlined. Feedback is encouraged to treasurer.owenmoregaels.sligo@gaa.ie

The aim of the night was to provide an outlet for an evening and hopefully get some people re-connecting again and have some fun. We hope we achieved this goal.

Final Standings:

Owenmore Gaels hold virtual table quiz to beat Covid-19 blues!

Owenmore Gaels are holding a virtual table quiz to boost the spirits of their members during the Covid-19 restrictions – and the event is open to non-locals too.

Owenmore Gaels, who have a long history of staging table quizzes, will host their first ever online quiz on Saturday, April 25th.

The event will start with some musical entertainment by Sligo Scór Sinsir Solo Singing champion Aoife Hodgins at 9pm followed by the quiz at 9.30pm.

“It is exactly the same as an ordinary table quiz, except that it’s online. Families can form their own teams in their own homes, or people can virtually team up together even though they are in different locations. In this way, they will comply in full with the HSE’s Covid-19 regulations,” said Thomas Kerins, the resident quizmaster at Owenmore Gaels, who will set the questions.

Entry fee will be just €10 per table and the club have teamed up with online venue The Horan Stand to run the quiz.

“We regularly hold table quizzes locally and we hope to get back to doing that very soon, but while we are waiting for the Covid19 restrictions to be lifted, we have decided to go online. It will give our loyal table quiz supporters something to look forward to” said Thomas.

“Given that everyone will be on their laptops or desktops, we will craft a significant number of questions that are not easily resolved by Google.”

Teams can register here: https://thehoranstand.com/og-quiz1/

Junior B team into county semi Final!

Owenmore Gaels 1-17 Coolera/Strandhill 0-11

The junior B team continued their impressive form to make it a clean sweep in the group stages and secure a county semi-final place.
Playing into a strong wind in the first half we got the first score of the game through Stephen Fallon assisted by Michael Casey. Coolera got two of the next three, ours again from Fallon who was quick onto a loose ball in the danger area. We were defending well, led by full back John Sweeney who made two crucial interceptions in this period.
Glen McCormack split the posts after good work from Adrian Egan and Fallon. Egan then got on the scoresheet after we patiently worked the ball upfield and McCormack broke the cover. Coolera hit back with two in a row to equalise. We went in front again when McCormack profited from a superb block and run from Ciaran Mcpartland to point. Coolera again equalised in what was developing into a fascinating battle. Coolera nudged in front for the first time before Egan equalised from a free. We then struck a goal when McCormack hit the net after a fine counter attack. Half time score 1-6 0-6 in our favour.
We started the second with a flourish. Fallon won a free which Egan converted. Fallon, who proved a real menace in this quarter, scored two in a row, the second a super move involving Casey and Liam Gilligan. Luke Middleton followed up on spilled ball to put over the bar and give us a 7 point lead.
Coolera pointed but it would only be a brief reprieve. Ciaran Mcpartland got the score his workrate deserved before Conall O’Dwyer finished a flowing move involving Bryan Mcpartland, McCormack and Fallon.
Fallon and McCormack combined again to set up Egan and put us 1-14 0-7 to the good.
Coolera mustered a response in the shape of two points. Egan pointed again before Gavin Phelan made a super save to push a goalbound effort over the bar.
Substitute Niall Dunican took a nice point before Egan got another, set up again by the McCormack, Mcpartland, Fallon combo.
We had the luxury of missing a penalty before Dunican took another score and a Coolera free rounded off the scoring for the day.

Another good performance from this developing team. Gavin Phelan’s kick outs were outstanding. Youngsters Ciaran Mcpartland and Middleton again showing very well. John Sweeney and Bryan Mcpartland were very impressive at the back. Gerard Doyle and Ross Trill dominated the middle section, Trill showing off a great range of passing throughout. McCormack and Mcpartland were a threat all evening. Egan was as ever deadly in front of the posts, with Fallon offering a different option up top. A very good team performance across the 20 players involved.

Team: Gavin Phelan, Bryan Mcpartland, John Sweeney, Luke Middleton (0-1), Liam Gilligan, Kevin O’Hara, Joey Sweeney (Diarmuid O’Grady), Ross Trill, Gerard Doyle, Glen McCormack (1-2), Michael Casey, Ciaran Mcpartland (0-1), Conall O’Dwyer (0-1) (Niall Dunican (0-2)), Stephen Fallon (0-4) (Thomas Kerins), Adrian Egan (0-6, 2F) (Alan Anderson) Subs: Brendan McCann

Senior lads draw with St. Farnans in dramatic match

Owenmore Gaels 0-19 St. Farnans 2-13

The senior lads just about kept their division 2 survival hopes alive in an enthralling draw with St. Farnans on Sunday.

Our return to a wonderfully presented Connolly Park after an eight week absence unfortunately did not inspire a good start. Goalkeeper Jason Farrell was forced into a good save in the first minute, St. Farnans scoring the resultant 45’ and quickly followed this up with three more scores, two from frees as they dominated the opening exchanges.

Our first score came from Tommy Trill, the ball well worked up the pitch after an important Garrett Lavin turnover. The teams exchanges scores, ours a free from Aaron Nicholson after he was fouled inside before Trill got his second of the game.

However Farnans were still on top and struck for their first goal following a flowing move and tagged on 2 points leaving us 1-7 0-3 behind and in big trouble.

The experienced Peter Wynne led the charge, getting on the end of a Conor Davey pass to shoot a point and quickly following up with another, this time fisting over with Davey again providing the assist. Farnans responded with a point before we got the last two of the half, both frees, from Nicholson and Stephen Fallon. Between these scores the Farnans keeper saved point blank from a Nicholson effort as we showed signs of a fightback. Half time score Owenmore Gaels 0-7 St. Farnans 1-8

Fallon hit the first point of the second half, a fine effort set up by Jack Foley and Trill. Fallon almost followed up with a goal, fetching a high ball just outside the square and engineering room for the shot only for the keeper to pull off a brilliant save. Nicholson popped over a free before Fallon hit a beauty after a great run from Aaron Walsh. Farnans got out of their half to win a free which they converted but we pulled the margin back to the minimum with another Nicholson free after Wynne was fouled. Against the run of play Farnans then struck for a second goal.

However we responded to the setback. Trill drove forward smashing through tackles to land a score, after a super run from sub Mark Walsh. Nicholson converted another free before Trill added his fourth point made by an inspirational turnover by Nicholson chasing back into the midfield to pull us back within a point. Farnans mustered a response in the shape of a point but we continued on relentlessly. Davey knocked over before Nicholson hit a massive score from play off his left boot to tie the game up for the first time.

Kevin Healy was introduced and made an immediate impact, claiming a kick-out and pointing before Ross Taheny scored a free from the ground to put us two up entering the closing stages.

Credit to Farnans they responded to hit two points and once again level. We went in search of a winner and another lunge busting run from Mark Walsh ended with Foley splitting the posts in added time. However there was still time for Farnans to raid upfield and win a free to equalise with the last kick of the game.

Notable performances on the day for the Gaels were Peter Wynne at the back, Tommy Trill in midfield and Aaron Nicholson up top, Nicholson a senior team veteran of 20 years in particular showing he still has loads to offer at this level with an outstanding display.
