Owenmore Gaels 3-12 Calry St.Josephs 2-19
A committed and brave performance was not enough to secure any points for the senior team in this division 2 game against top of the table Calry/St.Josephs on Friday evening at Connolly Park.
We opened the scoring through a good Kevin O’Hara point. However Calry/St.Josephs hit back and took control for a 10 minute spell racing into a 5-1 lead. Conor davey then dragged us back into the game with a great finish from an exquisite Jason Farrell pass to raise the green flag, Calry responed with a goal of their own but we kept the scoreboard ticking over with points from Simon Cashman, Jason Farrell and Kevin O’Hara and showed signs we were warming up to the challenge. We were 5 down at the turn-around, 1-4 to 1-9.
Calry were quick out of the blocks in the second half blasting over 3 points in as many minutes to seemingly take control. However the Gaels response was magnificent. Our inside forward line of Adam McGoldrick and Dylan McMorrow suddenly sparked into life. McGoldrick followed in on a dropping ball in the square to fist home a major. McMorrow then went on a run of scoring 4 points from play, all great scores, the highlight coming Ciaran McDonald-esque from the outside of his boot from near the left sideline. The revival was based on a greatly improved defensive display, led by John Core and his fellow defenders.
Calry were rattled but managed to score a goal on the break to put themselves back into the lead. We responed with a goal of our own, McGoldrick again hitting the net with a great finish. We added to this with 3 points from McGoldrick (2F) and Alan Flynn (F). We found ourselves 2 points to the good with 10 minutes to go.
Unfortunately Calry then took the game by the scruff of the neck and reeled of 6 unanswered points to see out the game. The defeat was hard to take, as we did magnificently to put ourselves into a winning position in the second half but saw to our own downfall with some crucial mistakes to hand Calry the initiative in the end. The team is showing signs of improvement every week which is important. We will take positives from the game, learn from the negatives, and focus on this evenings match with Ballymote at the same venue at 7:30pm.
